Restaurant & Bar Norse – Kelham Island, Sheffield

May 2024 – We were kindly invited to Restaurant Norse, then based at Steelyard in Kelham Island – a cosy but exquisite restaurant to try their first ever tasting menu. Restaurant Norse’s Tasting Menus will be 4/7 courses that the restaurant will look to change periodically, but always offering freshly prepared and delicious, quality ingredients to food lovers in the City. Expect intricately plated up, aesthetic food with popping tastes and fresh ingredients, served to you on handmade kitchenware. Just magnificent.

We sat at the Chef’s Counter and enjoyed;

  1. Sourdough (from @crumb.sheffield), Hendo’s butter & crispy chicken skin – so many textures here and the subtle flavours made a good start to the meal.
  2. Beef Tartare, cheddar custard, pickled shallot, crispy onion, tobasco & caper jam, cheese crisp & sesame – Wow. We were a little nervous to try beef tartare but this was so scrumptious, it had a delightful acidic/tangy taste to it getting your tastebuds buzzing. An excellent dish.
  3. Lamb (Hogget) breast “kebab”, red cabbage kimchi, crispy onion, tahini, truffle – SO SO good. The Hogget, which I’d never had before, is slow-cooked in a water bath overnight and gives the most amazing texture. Blue cheese goes so well with this dish. An amazing course.
  4. 70% @bullionchocolate mousse, coconut flapjack, passionfruit, chilli & lemon verbena – A perfect end to a perfect meal. Rich chocolate takes the edge off the spice from the chilli syrup but in return the chilli takes away the sickliness of the rich chocolate.

We had some great wine paired with meal too, the Shiraz going superbly with the dessert. Wines: Funk Riesling , Pablo Old vine, Sand boy & Growers touch.

The restaurant also supports local independents that create their crockery and more, as well as having their own gin. Wishing Project Norse every bit of luck in the Kelham Island area, I’m excited to see what they bring to us next! Check out their website here.

July 2025 – 💫 Finally, we made a recent return to Restaurant & Bar Norse, now situated in the Krynkl building, on the edge of the Shalesmoor & Kelham area, where they have an intimate, vibrant and very stylish bar & restaurant. These guys know how to provide flavour, and some of their courses sound strange, but they absolutely work!

Quality, delicious, and beautiful food, paired with exceptional drinks, is what this restaurant is all about. And it’s so affordable too. We had the fabulous July 11 course tasting menu, which is priced at just £35!! Well worth it.
Expect loud music, an open kitchen where you can see the chef preparing and plating up each meticulous plate, and great service.

Some of the courses we tried at their new Chef’s Table were;
Prawn Pad Thai – without the noodles
BBQ Watermelon
Smoked Eel
Lamb & Strawberry
Chocolate & Pork Floss
and so on…

It was amazing. The first mouthful of 1 or 2 courses took us by surprise but really grew on us. We ate every last scrap and enjoyed it all. We also added one of the optional courses of the Scallop & Nduja Oyster for just £5 each – gorgeous!

Expect intricately plated up, aesthetic food with popping tastes and fresh ingredients, served to you on handmade kitchenware. Plus, check out their wine, sparkling or beer drinks pairings, which they have expertly paired with each course to bring out all of the amazing flavours. It’s just magnificent.

***Update – Since visiting, Norse have announced a rebrand launching in September, under 53 Degrees Norse… same location, different brand, same great tasted. I am interested to see where this brand are going next in their journey!
